1965 ASA 1000 GT COUPE BERTONE Châssis n° 1238 A la fin des années 1950, la production de Ferrari est encore très faible en volume.
Enzo Ferrari doit augmenter ses recettes et, pour ce faire, il n'a d'autre alternative que d'envisager la production de modèles plus abordables ou de céder des licences de fabrication.
Si l'idée d'une " petite " Ferrari ne le séduit pas - et en tout état de cause, il ne lui donnera pas son nom - il fait néanmoins étudier un moteur quatre cylindres de 849 cm3 à arbre à cames en tête qu'il installe pour évaluation dans un châssis Fiat modifié.
Cette brillante mécanique fait ses preuves dans une voiture habillée par Pinin Farina, la tipo 854 surnommée " Ferrarina ", mais celle-ci n'intéresse aucun industriel et le prototype sera ferraillé.
Entre-temps, la cylindrée du moteur a été augmentée à plus d'un litre.
Ferrari, à titre personnel, a néanmoins commandé à Bertone (qui ne travaille plus pour Maranello) un petit coupé biplace que dessine le jeune Giugi...
