In 1996, Subaru created the Outback as a variant of its Legacy estate, albeit with heightened suspension so it could compete in the growing sport‑utility vehicle (SUV) market.
It proved to be a big sales success for the Japanese manufacturer, so much so that the Outback line became a model in its own right in 2000.
