906-113German registration certificateCompetition vehicle sold without an MOT“Hidden away since 1971, formerly raced at Sebring in 1966, 1969, 1970 and 1971” Following the withdrawal from the Formula 1 programme in 1962, it was imperative for the German manufacturer to get back on its feet.

Dr Hans Tomala, Porsche’s technical director, therefore decided to return to Grand Touring and asked the design genius FA ‘Butzi ’ Porsche, the father of the 911, to take charge of the design… The result was breathtaking; the 904 became one of the most beautiful racing cars ever designed, and Butzi’s finest achievement.

Porsche’s first true racing prototype ended its career with a number of sporting achievements, including an overall victory at the 1964 Targa Florio and a class victory at the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The bar was therefore set very high for its successor, which was intended to meet the new requirements of the FIA’s Group 4 regulations for the 1966 World Sportscar Cha...
