Unlike its predecessor, the Unimog 401, the Unimog 404 is more a small 1.5-ton off-road truck than an agricultural vehicle.

It was often used as a chassis for fire trucks and military vehicles.
It is powered by the Mercedes Benz M180, a 2.2-l single overhead cam in-line 6-cylinder engine that equipped the 220 W187.
Like many of its predecessors, this model appears to have come from the French army.
As a rotary engine, it deserves some work to restore it to its former glory, so that it can pass the technical inspection to be duly registered in France (VL).
