Following the start of production of the Austin Healey 100, distributors, especially in the USA, demanded competition results to encourage sales and create publicity...

Donald Healey, initially a rally driver, had already foreseen this and announced the production of four "Special Test Cars": SPL 224B, 225B, 226B and 227B.

These four examples were constantly modified, and regularly entered into competition, with the most notable result being 3rd place in the 1954 Sebring 12 Hours for #224B.

The 1954 London Motor Show saw the announcement of the 100S, which inherited its suffix from the famous circuit.
The #227B was the most advanced of the four cars, never registered as it was dedicated to speed records.
