The French flag was waved by Jean-Marie Balestre, then director of the FFSA, giving the start to the most
legendary of endurance races, the 24 Heures du Mans.

Among the 55 cars taking part, the public noticed an astonishing BMW 3.0 CSL, sporting an incredible livery.

Behind the wheel was legendary auctioneer Hervé Poulain, a gentleman driver in his own right, who had commissioned the artist Alexander Calder, renowned for his revolutionary mobiles set in motion by the air, to paint his mount.

Although the adventure ended on the 7th lap, the Art Car movement was born...
