The Bavarian manufacturer has just
unveiled a roadster (the second post-war model after the iconic 507) with sleek lines and a distinctive feature: retractable doors.


A real leap into the future, with the Z standing for Zukunft (future in German)!
One might have thought that this was a showroom prototype, but this was not the case, as exactly 8,000 Z1s were produced
between July 1988 and June 1991.

It was a real success, but limited due to its high price tag.

To develop this unusual vehicle, BMW engineers started with a galvanised 325i platform, modified by coachbuilder Baur, who was accustomed to converting
2002s into convertibles in the 1970s, with certain reinforcements that made the Z1 one of the most rigid convertibles of all time, a specific multi-link rear suspension, a roll bar integrated into the windscreen pillars ...
