Can one imagine a more boring saloon than the Opel Omega? In the early 1990s, the German brand, now under General Motors’ umbrella, had an ageing image and technology.

A decision was made across the Atlantic to give a major shake-up to the anthill...
And it was in England that it would happen, at Lotus Cars, a small outfit that had also fallen into the American giant’s hands, and which was called upon for some sensitive or cutting-edge projects.

The 6-cylinder engine (now enlarged to 3.6 litres and force-fed by 2 turbos) was transformed, and in addition to the 6-speed gearbox from the Corvette ZR-1, the placid Omega that had asked for nothing underwent a drastic weight-loss treatment.

The placid Teutonic saloon was transformed into a true monster capable of showing up everyone, from direct competitors like BMW or Mercedes-Benz to sports car manufacturers, Ferrari and Porsche at the forefront.

And the looks weren’t forgotten either!
