Michel Hommell, patron de presse fondateur du magazine Echappement a eu mille vies.
Ex pilote de la Coupe Gordini, collectionneur avisé créateur du Musée de Lohéac, « importateur » du Rallycross en France, il fut aussi constructeur automobile… En effet, suite à un sondage Echappement paru en 1989 (« Berlinette des années 1990 : imaginez-la ») et devant servir à définir la sportive idéale, il décide, fort de ce cahier des charges ciblé, de créer sa propre voiture de sport, une berlinette qui sera logiquement baptisée Echappement.
On retrouve Gilles Dupré, le rédacteur en chef du magazine, à la technique, et Eric de Pauw, styliste, au design.
En décembre 1991, une maquette au 1/5e est validée par Michel Hommell, et un premier prototype présenté au Mondial de l’Automobile 1992.
