A la fin des années 1980, BMW souhaite développer une auto pour concurrencer les petites bombes à la mode que sont les Volkswagen Golf GTi, Peugeot 205 GTi et Renault 5 GT Turbo.

La gamme de l’époque débute avec la Série 3 E30, plus bourgeoise que sportive, et la très performante M3 est bien trop chère pour s’aligner sur le marché des GTi.
Les dirigeants de la firme bavaroise décident donc de lancer dans l’arène la 318i, en la faisant évoluer en 318is, pour Sport.
