Au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Donald Healey, pilote automobile réputé, mettra à exécution tout son génie au profit de l’industrie automobile.
Il s’associe d’abord à la marque Nash pour produire à partir de 1951 une voiture de sport 2 places, la Nash-Healey destinée au marché américain.
En 1953, la première Austin-Healey 100 voit le jour avec le concours d’Austin et des chaînes de montage Jensen Motors.
Ce roadster sportif se positionne particulièrement bien entre les rustiques TR2 et la noble Jaguar XK.
Il est tout d’abord motorisé par un 4-cylindres de 2 660 cm3 développant 90 chevaux et sera remplacé en 1956 par un 6-cylindres en ligne de 2 639 cm3 développant 102 chevaux, couplé à une boîte à quatre rapports.
La 100/6 reçoit alors la dénomination interne BN4.
