THE DATA

FAQs about the data, its constraints and uses

DATA SOURCE

All data on this site is derived from the vehicle licensing statistics published by the Department for Transport and the DVLA in the UK.

This data is UK specific.

Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

WHICH CARS ARE IN THE DATABASE

The data covers every car that is licensed (i.e. taxed and used on the road) or SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification, i.e. the vehicle is registered but cannot be driven on a public road).

Vehicle make and model are recorded as per their V5. V5's don't always have the exact correct model listed (as DVLA don't have it as an option provided by the manufacturer initially) - in this case the model will be set to "Missing" and is unidentifable from the data.

HOW SHOULD THIS DATA BE USED

Given the previous, take all the data with a pinch of salt.

It won't be 100% accurate but will be a very good indicator of how many vehicles are left on the road for each make and model.

It's to be used for fun, not financial decision making.

YOUR DATA DIFFERS FROM OTHER SITES

Glad you asked! It does indeed and there's good reason.

Other sites simply take the make and model provided by DVLA and show you the statistics based on that.

That's prone to error. For example, an Alfa Romeo GTV is a DVLA model, as you know that could be a 105 series, a 916 or multiple other models over a 50+ year period.

We go a step further and look at every model on a year basis, apply our thousands of rules to get the correct model that can be mapped to our model list.

In other words, we're going a step further to be more accurate and more precise.

HOW OFTEN IS THE DATA UPDATED

DVLA update the data and publish the new data tables every quarter. We update this data once recevied.
