Vespa, Italian for "wasp," emerged post-WWII, conceived by Enrico Piaggio.
Needing affordable transport for Italians, Piaggio tasked aeronautical engineer Corradino D'Ascanio to design it.
D'Ascanio, disliking motorcycles, innovated: a step-through design, rear-mounted engine, and direct drive.
Legend says Piaggio, seeing the prototype, exclaimed, "Sembra una vespa" ("It resembles a wasp").
Few know Vespa played a role in the 1950s Cold War espionage.
Italian intelligence modified Vespas for agents needing discreet transport in Soviet-controlled areas.
These "Vespa GS 150" models were altered with hidden compartments and boosted engines.
