Tatra, originating in Kopřivnice, present-day Czech Republic, began as Nesselsdorfer Wagenbau, in 1850. It produced railway carriages, later venturing into automobiles in 1897, with the Präsident model.
Hans Ledwinka's innovative designs, including the Tatra 77, featured streamlined bodies and air-cooled engines.
During World War II, Tatra produced vehicles for the German military. Post-war, it continued production, mainly of luxury cars like the Tatra 603.
Tatra faced financial difficulties and ceased car production in 1999, focusing on trucks.
A lesser-known fact: Tatra's aerodynamic designs influenced Ferdinand Porsche's Volkswagen Beetle. Tatra sued Porsche before World War II, but the case was interrupted by the German invasion of Czechoslovakia. After the war, Volkswagen paid Tatra settlement.
