Sterling was a British-American car brand that existed briefly in the late 1980s.
It was the product of a partnership between Rover and Austin Rover, of the UK, and Sterling Motor Cars, of the US.
The cars were designed in the UK and based on the Rover 800 series.
They were intended to provide an upscale, British-designed alternative to Japanese and European imports in the American market.
However, Sterling suffered from quality issues and reliability problems, which hurt its reputation.
Sales declined, and the brand was discontinued in 1991.
Here's a little-known fact: Sterling attempted to target younger buyers with a marketing campaign featuring British musicians.
The campaign was unsuccessful, and the brand never gained traction with its intended audience.
