Stanley Motor Carriage Company, founded by twins Francis and Freelan Stanley, produced steam-powered cars from 1902 to 1924. Their cars were known for speed.
In 1906, a Stanley Steamer, driven by Fred Marriott, set a world record of 127.66 mph at Ormond Beach, Florida. This record for steam-powered vehicles remains unbroken.
A lesser-known story: In 1917, Freelan Stanley survived a car accident where his Stanley Steamer plunged off a bridge. He was thrown clear, but the incident led him to believe gasoline cars were safer. This influenced the company's later shift away from steam power.
