SsangYong, meaning "double dragon," started as two separate companies, Ha Dong-hwan Motor Workshop and Dongbang Motor Co, merging in 1963. They initially built buses, trucks, and special-purpose vehicles.
In the 1980s, SsangYong shifted focus to SUVs, later partnering with Mercedes-Benz in the 1990s. This collaboration led to models like the Musso and Korando, using Mercedes-Benz technology.
SsangYong faced financial difficulties, changing ownership several times. Mahindra & Mahindra acquired a majority stake in 2011, but later sought a new investor.
Did you know SsangYong built a limousine for the chairman? Based on the Chairman model, it featured an extended wheelbase and luxurious interior. It's a rare sight.
