Smart emerged from a collaboration between Swatch and Mercedes-Benz in the 1990s.
Originally envisioned as a revolutionary, ultra-compact city car, the first model, the City-Coupe (later Fortwo), launched in 1998.
A lesser-known fact: Nicolas Hayek, Swatch's CEO, initially wanted the car to be electric.
However, technical limitations led to a gasoline-powered engine for the first generation.
