Skoda began in 1895 as Laurin & Klement, founded by Václav Laurin and Václav Klement in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic. Initially, they made bicycles, then motorcycles, and finally cars in 1905.
During WWI, the company produced for the Austro-Hungarian army.
In 1925, Laurin & Klement merged with Škoda Works, an industrial conglomerate, to secure its financial future.
After WWII, Škoda was nationalized under communist rule.
Despite the political climate, Škoda produced models like the Octavia and Felicia.
In 1991, Volkswagen Group acquired Škoda, transforming it into a modern automaker.
A little-known fact: During the communist era, Škoda cleverly circumvented parts shortages by unofficially "borrowing" components from other Warsaw Pact vehicles, leading to some quirky, one-off modifications on cars.
