Proton, Malaysia's first national car company, was established in 1983. It was envisioned by then Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad, to boost Malaysia's industrialization.
Initially, Proton cars were based on Mitsubishi models. The Proton Saga, launched in 1985, was based on the Mitsubishi Lancer Fiore.
A little-known fact: Proton almost collaborated with Citroen in the 1990s. The plan was to produce Citroen models in Malaysia for the Asian market. However, the deal fell through, leading Proton to continue its partnership with Mitsubishi.
