Mazda started as Toyo Cork Kogyo in 1920, producing cork. After near bankruptcy, Jujiro Matsuda took over in 1921.
In 1931, they shifted to vehicle manufacturing, with the Mazda-Go auto rickshaw. The name "Mazda" comes from Ahura Mazda, a Zoroastrian god.
During WWII, Mazda made weapons for the Japanese military. In the 1960s, Mazda embraced the Wankel rotary engine.
Did you know Mazda almost became "Diamond"? Before settling on Mazda, company executives considered "Diamond" due to its association with Mitsubishi's logo. However, they ultimately chose Mazda, linking the brand to a symbol of light and wisdom.
