GAZ, or Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod, traces back to 1932, a child of collaboration between Ford and the Soviet Union. Initially, GAZ produced Ford models under license, like the GAZ-A, a near copy of the Ford Model A.
During World War II, GAZ shifted to military vehicles, most famously the GAZ-67, a rugged 4x4. Post-war, GAZ became known for durable, if basic, cars like the Volga, a symbol of Soviet status.
A little-known fact: GAZ built a handful of the GAZ-GL-1, a streamlined race car, in 1938. It reached a reported 107 mph, a record for Soviet cars at the time.
