The DUKW, affectionately known as the "Duck," was a six-wheel-drive amphibious truck used extensively in World War II.

Designed by Rod Stephens Jr. of Sparkman & Stephens Inc., it was built by General Motors. The name "DUKW" comes from GM's internal code: D for 1942, U for utility, K for all-wheel drive, and W for dual rear axles.

A lesser-known story: During the invasion of Sicily in 1943, DUKWs were crucial for resupplying troops. One DUKW, nicknamed "The Flying Duck," was said to have been blown completely out of the water by a rogue wave, only to land safely back in the sea, continuing its mission.
