DKW, a German car make, started in 1916. It was founded by Jorgen Skafte Rasmussen. Initially, DKW produced steam fittings.
Later, DKW shifted to making two-stroke engines. These engines powered motorcycles and cars. DKW became part of Auto Union in 1932.
During World War II, DKW produced vehicles for the German military. After the war, DKW production resumed.
In the 1950s, DKW cars were known for their two-stroke engines. Auto Union was acquired by Daimler-Benz in 1958.
Volkswagen acquired Auto Union in 1964. The DKW brand was phased out. The last DKW car was produced in 1966.
A little-known fact: DKW pioneered front-wheel drive in Germany with its F1 model in 1931, challenging conventional rear-wheel drive layouts of the time.
