Cannonball Baker, a race car driver, inspired the "Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash," an unsanctioned race across the US.
The race, started in 1971, ran a few times. It was a protest against speed limits.
The Cannonball Run movie popularized the event. It cemented the Cannonball legend in car culture.
Did you know that the winner of the first Cannonball race drove a modified Dodge van? It was disguised as an ambulance. They wanted to avoid police attention. The ambulance even had a fake doctor on board.
