Benz, now Mercedes-Benz, began with Karl Benz's 1885 Motorwagen, the first gasoline-powered automobile.
Benz & Cie., formed in 1883, produced engines before shifting to cars.
In 1926, Benz merged with Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft, becoming Daimler-Benz.
A lesser-known story: During World War II, Daimler-Benz factories produced engines for aircraft, tanks, and other military vehicles. Some facilities were repurposed, and forced labor was used. After the war, the company faced scrutiny and worked to address its wartime past.
