Benetton Formula Ltd. competed in Formula One from 1986 to 2001. The team was owned by the Benetton family, who ran the clothing company of the same name.
In 1985, the Benetton Group purchased the Toleman Motorsport team. Benetton secured its first victory at the 1986 Mexican Grand Prix with Gerhard Berger. Michael Schumacher won the Drivers' Championship with Benetton in 1994 and 1995. The team also won the Constructors' Championship in 1995.
Did you know Benetton initially wanted Thierry Boutsen to partner with Alessandro Nannini in 1989? Boutsen had a pre-agreement with Frank Williams. Benetton signed Johnny Herbert instead, but he was not fully fit after an accident. This led to some races where other drivers filled in.
