American Bantam, born from the ashes of American Austin, aimed to offer smaller, economical cars.
Their claim to fame? The Bantam Reconnaissance Car, later known as the Jeep.
Though Bantam designed the original prototype, its limited production capacity led the U.S. Army to tap Willys-Overland and Ford for mass production.
A little-known fact: Karl Probst, a talented but initially unpaid designer, finalized the Bantam's Jeep design in a mere two days. He was initially reluctant to take on the project.
