The Shelby Cobra 289, a legendary sports car, emerged from Carroll Shelby's vision of combining a lightweight British chassis with American V8 power.
The story goes that Shelby, after retiring from racing, learned that AC Cars in England was losing its engine supplier. He contacted AC and convinced them to provide chassis. Then, he approached Chevrolet for engines, but they declined. Ford, wanting to compete with Chevrolet's Corvette, agreed to supply engines.
The Cobra 289 was produced from 1963 to 1965. It quickly gained fame for its exceptional performance.
Its successor was the Shelby Cobra 427.
A lesser-known fact is that some early Cobra 289s were painted in unconventional colors due to paint supply issues. Shelby sometimes had to use whatever paint was available, leading to some unique and undocumented color combinations.
