The BMW 2002, produced from 1968 to 1976, is a compact car known for helping to establish BMW's reputation as a maker of sporty sedans. It was born out of a desire to have a two-door version of the New Class sedans with a 2.0-liter engine.

Its successor was the BMW 3 Series.

A fun fact: the idea for the 2002 came about when BMW's director of product planning and an independent importer in America separately installed 2.0 L engines in 1600-2 models. When they realized they had both done the same, they prepared a joint proposal to BMW's management to manufacture the 2002.
