During the 1950s, when Mercedes-Benz dominated top-level motorsport, the firm’s road-going flagship was the breathtaking 300 SL.

However, with its price well beyond the reach of most enthusiasts, Mercedes-Benz sought to offer similar glamour and engineering in a more accessible package.

The result was the 190 SL, introduced as the 300 SL’s smaller stablemate and built to the same high standards of design, refinement and quality.
Powered by a new, slightly over-square 1.9-litre straight-four SOHC engine producing 120bhp via twin-choke dual Solex carburettors and mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox, the sleek and comparatively light 190 SL was capable of 115mph and 0-60mph in around 13 seconds.
