The first generation Nissan/Datsun 'Z' cars, launched with the 240Z in 1969, were designed to compete directly with European sports cars.

Styled with influence from Count Albrecht Goertz, they combined striking looks with thoroughly modern engineering - a 2.4-litre straight-six producing around 150bhp, a 5-speed manual gearbox, fully independent suspension, rack and pinion steering and front disc brakes.

Quick, well balanced and reliable, the 240Z soon became a sensation both on the road and in motorsport.
Its drivetrain was closely related to that of the successful Datsun 510 saloon, widely used in competition, and it was not long before tuners recognised the 240Z’s potential.

One of the most notable was Spike Anderson.

Having worked at Broadspeed in the 1960s on Minis and Anglias, he founded Race Head Services and began modifying Datsuns.

His first ‘Samuri’ (deliberately misspelled, as ‘Samurai’ was unavailable) was a humble Datsun 1200 making 105bhp.
