ODOMETER
1940 Ford Sawin ‘Big Car’

Built in the midst of the Great Depression, the racing cars of the era, such as the Sawin, had to be reasonably economical and so many were fitted with four cylinder engines from the Ford Model B. Racing was local, stock-based but still creative and competitive. The backbone of Depression-era racing were the 'big cars' or 'sprint cars' that were lightweight, quick, rugged cars that could compete night after night on the bullrings that dotted America for starting and prize money and occasional points in season championships. It was 'the show' that counted, coaxing nickels and dimes out of the pockets of spectators for whom inexpensive entertainment provided distraction from the depression of day-to-day reality. Sawin was a Rhode Island based race car fabricator throughout the 1930s and almost exclusively built Midgets - this is one of very few known 'big cars'. The car has a relatively simple steel and aluminium construction with drum brakes on all four corners and a suicide type front axle with the spring and front axle mounted ahead of the front-frame cross member. Showing a fantastic patina with beautiful livery on the body work, this unfinished project gives the buyer the chance to tailor it to their particular requirements. It has all the makings of a great sprint or hill climb racer in the spirit of how it was originally conceived; simple, economical and fun racing. Opportunities to purchase these little race cars present themselves few and far between, let alone at no reserve.

FACT

Because, well, why not...?

Turkey vultures use defensive vomit to get rid of any disturbing animal. They can propel their vomit up to 10 feet.
