This 1931 Ford roadster was hot rodded by Jim Cooper in Illinois in the 1960s and dubbed “The Cockroach.” It was subsequently shown and raced in the Midwest throughout the 1960s and 1970s, before spending several decades in storage until 2006. The channeled Model A body rides on a chrome-plated 1932 Ford frame, and power comes from a 425ci Buick Nailhead V8 paired with a three-speed TH400 automatic transmission. Additional features include a 1956 Chevrolet rear end with Positraction, a dropped front axle, hydraulic drum brakes, The 1960s garage build included channeling the body 8” and chopping the windshield before the car was painted, reportedly using 78 coats of candy amber lacquer fogged with candy gold accents. Additional features include a chopped 1932 Ford grille, chrome nerf bars, and custom-fabricated chrome headers that can be left open or capped to route exhaust through full-length chrome piping beneath the car. Chrome Astro wheels wear Firestone Deluxe Champion bias-ply whitewalls up front and pie-crust slicks measuring 8.00-15 out back. A period Astro Custom Wheels decal can be seen on the windshield. The car rides on a chrome-plated 1932 Ford frame with a dropped front axle, fabricated hairpins, and a chrome transverse rear leaf spring. Braking is handled by chrome Ford hydraulic drums at all four corners. The interior features black diamond tuck vinyl upholstery on the door panels and custom bench seat with matching carpets, reportedly by Dickie Wright. The shift lever is fitted with a body-colored knob embossed with “The Cockroach.” A body-colored dash sourced from a 1932 Ford truck features an engine-turned panel with Stewart Warner and VDO gauges. Just over 8,300 miles are shown on the five-digit odometer, with total mileage unknown. The engine bay features a chrome firewall and houses a 425ci Nailhead V8 with a body-colored block and heads, six chrome Stromburg carburetors on a Weiand Drag Star intake manifold, finned Weiand valve covers, and matching spark plug covers as well as chromed and polished accessories. A coolant flush and oil change were performed in 2020. Shifting is through a three-speed TH400 automatic transmission that was fitted with a new pan gasket in 2020. The body-colored 1956 Chevrolet rear axle features Positraction. The underbody, suspension, brakes, and exhaust components are chromed. Period build photos can be seen in the gallery below along with magazines with articles about the car, including a cover feature in the Spring 2012 issue of Traditional Rod & Kulture Illustrated. A start-up video is viewable below along with a profile on the car from 2012.
