1968 Ford Escort Twin Cam Ex Works Rally Car

BEV782G was first seen on the Monte Carlo Rally in 1969 after being treated to full works trim by the famous Ford, Boreham mechanics and came a very respectable 4th place with Jean Todt (Current FIA President), which was his first ever outing for team Ford. Ford entered three Twincams during this iconic rally and this example finished top out of the three cars. Next up in the driving seat of BEV982G as part of the Team Ford campaign was Hannu Mikkola on the San Remo rally of 1969. They had a great rally but sadly did not finish this time out. Mikkola also ran the car during the 1969 RAC rally. Roger Clark subsequently took over driving responsibilities on the 1969 Circuit of Ireland rally and with trusted navigator Jim Porter, they stormed to 1 st place and won the rally. It is in this full group 6 specification and livery that the vendor took as inspiration for the restoration. After the Circuit of Ireland win in 1969 Ford were on a high and entered BEV into the 1969 Welsh Rally and did not let Ford down with yet another 1 st place with Ove Anderson and Gunnar Palm as navigator. In 1970 BEV782G was sold by Ford, having competed in six international rallies for them and had a great life as an ex works car that never stopped rallying until approximately 1991 with drives from Tony Morris, Reg Mullenger, Roger Lane and Gordon Batchelor. As with practically all ex works rally cars, BEV982G was re-shelled and the vendor has photographs of the car on a Mk 2 Escort shell during the 1970s and on a Sierra shell in the early 1990s. Naturally, these periods in the car's history are fully documented in the history file. The vendor was lucky enough to locate a totally correct 1968 Mk I body shell that did not require any repair work and the fabrication process took place over a six week period at Rally Sport Development using traditional braising techniques, as used by the Ford Boreham mechanics. The car subsequently spent another 6 weeks at Kartec being prepared and painted. Included in the history file is a full photographic record documenting all of this work. Mechanically, BEV is fitted with a correct 1850cc Escort twincam engine with 681F block and head. It has been totally rebuilt to Boreham specification by CTM Dagenham, dyno tested at 165 bhp and has covered a mere 150 miles since work was completed. The gearbox is a correct four speed bullet box fully rebuilt at great expense at the Gearbox Man Ltd and a brand new AP Racing clutch has been fitted to a magnesium bellhousing. The full extent of the car's rebuilt and specification is simply too detailed to mention, however, any additional details can be provided on request. The car today has been fully restored to period concours condition by the vendor and Rally Sport Development and comes with a complete and documented provenance, the original body chassis tag, MoT test certificate and tax until September 2011, registration to the escort AVO club and has all of the paperwork one would expect from a car of this nature. Included is a full documented list of all the owners since 1969, many period photographs, magazines reports and an invitation to the highly prestigious 2011 slowly sideways event that Reinhard Klein holds in Germany every year.
