Bristol 403 1953
This iconic fifties sports saloon, the Bristol 403, was registered on 31.12.53 in Australia. The first owner was the famous Sir John Stanley Storey(1896 – 1955). In the history there is the ‘Australian’ Directory of Biography all about Sir John amounting to three full A4 pages. She came back to the UK and was registered on the 16.11.10. Our vendor, a retired farmer, purchased the car in January 2016 – incidentally he is only selling this beautiful car because he has too many classics – and so the 403 is not used enough. Once in his ownership he set about getting the car into the condition it is today. In the history file, there is a letter from the previous owner, a Mr. Brian May – who removed the cylinder head as it had a faulty gasket – the head was de-coked and he photographed the engine when it was stripped down – and you can see how clean the bores are. The vendor stripped the car down to bare metal and sent it away to Rodney Stoke Garage for a full re-spray (invoice £3309. on file) Also in this file there are a number of recent invoices. The present condition of this car is as one would expect to find in a car which resided in a dry, hot climate. She is finished in Brooklands green with tan leather interior. She really does have an excellent patina and she can be viewed, by appointment, as from the 1st of March. Auctioneers Notes: And so to Wedmore in Somerset on a dull winter’s day to meet the owner of this superb example. When I first saw this beautiful car, I noticed the lines are amazingly modern, when you consider that she is 67 years old. She is very solid and we do have the original registration numbers. She is a cracker of a car, and by the way, she is still fitted with the lace-up leather gaiters which encase the suspension and springs. We have been in contact with the Australian Bristol Owners Club who have provided us with a list of owners from new which is included in the history file.
