1953 Bentley R-Type Standard Steel Saloon

The R-Type is the second series of post-war Bentley motorcars and replaced the Mk. VI. Essentially a larger-boot version of the Mk. VI, the R -Type is regarded by some as a stop-gap before the introduction of the S-Series cars in 1955. The vast majority of cars produced indeed were Bentleys with some 2,500 units manufactured during the R-Type's run. During development, it was referred to as the Bentley Mk. VII, and in fact the chassis cards for these cars describe them as Bentley 7. The R-Type name, which is now usually applied, stems from the RT chassis series. This R-Type saloon, with automatic gearbox, was built for The Clyde Automobile Company, Rolls-Royce distributors for Scotland, and displayed at the 1953 Scottish Motor Show after which it was used as their demonstrator until it was sold to a Mr Bannister of Unterluss, Germany in April 1954. The next recorded owner was Sir Robert Evans who lived in Bray, Berkshire; he purchased the car in 1959. In 1973 this Bentley R-Type was sold and shipped to Canada where it remained in one family ownership until purchased and repatriated to the UK approximately two years ago. Whilst in Canada, a complete 'ground up' restoration was started, the body and all of its parts were removed and the chassis restored. The bodywork was repaired and repainted in maroon and black, the bumpers and much of the chrome-work was re-plated, the engine and gearbox were taken out of the chassis and work appears to have been carried out to the engine and carburettors. The vendor believes that this car is almost complete, and it comes supplied with the original grey interior, all the glasswork, exhaust system and original key. The body and bulkhead are not securely fitted to the chassis and are ready to be removed again so the chassis can be finished and rewired before final assembly; the same applies to the engine and gearbox which we are informed are complete. The car also comes with a V5C registration document retaining the original registration number 'LUS25'. This is a rare opportunity to purchase a Bentley R-Type with an automatic gearbox which can be restored to concours condition in your choice of colour and trim or just to reassemble to make a very usable car.
